Windows is an operating system (OS) developed by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, and tablet PCs. It is the most popular OS and is used on an estimated 87.27% of all desktop computers worldwide. First released in 1985 as a graphical user interface (GUI) for MS-DOS, the Windows OS has since gone through a series of updates and overhauls, with the latest version being office 2019.
The Windows OS has several features that make it stand out from other OS. Security and stability are two of the main attractions. Windows is designed to protect user data privacy and ensure computer safety even in the presence of malicious attacks. Operating system updates help to keep PCs secure with the latest patching and software updates. Windows also has an easy to use graphical user interface which allows users to easily control different aspects of the computer instead of having to use commands and rough programming. Windows also comes with bundled productivity software such a Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote suite. This makes it easier for users to immediately perform tasks without having to search for and purchase additional software. Windows also supports a variety of hardware, with its large library and range of device drivers. This makes it simpler for people to easily upgrade their computer components and add more peripherals. Since its original debut in 1985, the Windows OS has gone through multiple iterations and features updates. The initial concurrent version of Windows was Windows 3.1 that came out in 1992, which replaced the MS-DOS command line interpretation with a graphical user interface. This was followed in 1995 by Windows 95. This OS included features such as the capacity to store information and programs in folders, visual icons to represent programs and files, mouse-functionality, a new user interface called the ‘Start’ menu, multimedia support and web browsing. Windows XP was released in 2001 and brought in features like the XP Theme engine, digital imaging tools, CD and DVD burning capabilities, IP routing, wireless networking, updated security features and new versions of the Windows Media Player. It was also able to link with Xbox consoles, making it one of the first OS to completely integrate gaming with PCs. In 2007, the Windows Vista OS was launched and brought in useful features such as a redesigned GUI, improved search functions, system-wide search capabilities, Internet Explorer version 7, Windows Defender (anti-spyware protection) and Windows Powershell (command line utility). Windows 7 was released in 2009 and included faster boot times, improved entertainment features, indirect multi-touch input, streamlined networking tools and enhanced user account and security features. In 2015, Windows 10 was released and this marked a major milestone in the Windows OS feature evolution. This version included more enhanced user interface features, wider support for gaming, virtual desktops, deeper integration with OneDrive and Cortana, and a new browser called Microsoft Edge windows 10 pro. Windows is an important OS that has been a constant part of every consumer’s PC experience since its release. The OS continues to evolve, bringing in more features to make it easier and more convenient for users to work with their computers. From its initial days of a GUI-based OS to the introduction of more sophisticated tools, Windows continues to be a reliable and stable platform for personal and business uses.
